Anantara Roma Concorsa
Anantara Roma Concorsa (Event Cancelled)
Why review an event that never got off the ground?
Because we believe the event would have been worthy of a great review — and deserves a proper celebration, even in its absence. And not everything has been said.
One of the most anticipated events of the year was the debut of the Anantara Concorso in Rome. It had it all: a stunning hotel to set the glamorous tone, an exquisite showcase location in Villa Borghese, [former 16th century estate on the Pincian Hill turned public park] for the cars, a picturesque 42 km drive through the Roman foothills and back, and an independent concours exclusively for Italian-made machinery— all scheduled for late April in the Eternal City. The perfect ingredients to start the season off with a bang.
A standout moment to which we were particularly looking forward? The Friday morning procession from Piazza della Repubblica, complete with an al fresco lunch at Villa Aldobrandini, before a leisurely return to Casina Valadier that afternoon. It had all the makings of something special.
But fate had other plans. The most difficult decision, became the only decision the organisers could make in view of the death on Easter Monday—and funeral—of Pope Francis the same week. With global dignitaries en route to pay their respects and security measures tightening by the hour, there was simply no other choice. For many owners, whose cars had already made the journey to Italy, if not to Rome itself, it must have been a difficult conversation.
The silver lining? This wasn’t a cancellation, but a postponement. The sold-out event will return next spring, and all 50 vehicles originally selected have been re-invited for a redux in 2026. And really, what’s another year to a car that’s already a century old?
The list is spectacular. Which bodes exceptionally well for next year.
